Week 6 Reflection

This week’s work primarily centered around data collection, analysis, and preparing data to be distributed. My tasks this week allowed me to see the community engagement and needs assessment processes at multiple points. For example, a large part of my work focused on analyzing data from the very first community listening session surveys with a new Archway community. The purpose of this survey was to gain a broad understanding of what the community members feel are their biggest needs, challenges, and assets. Additionally, it aims to understand the general attitudes of citizens towards their community. A wide range of responses were received, but there were several themes that emerged. Then, I also had the opportunity to analyze data from a survey that focused on addressing a specific issue that had already been identified in a community. Because the issue was already identified by the community as being relevant to them, the survey responses were overall more in-depth and supportive of the work being done. These surveys included both quantitative and qualitative measures, but a majority of data was qualitative. In order to analyze the data, the thematic analysis and coding had to be conducted. After this had been done, I was able to create graphs and charts depicting the results in a way that was easy to understand. These results were then distributed back to the community leaders. This week I also had the opportunity to work on my team-work and leadership skills. I was tasked with taking the lead on the data analysis of the listening session surveys, which was a significant task because there were almost 400 respondents, and the results were needed within 48 hours. To accomplish this, I was able to work collaboratively with others in the office and delegate tasks as necessary to complete it on time. The health promotion competencies met this week are the following:

  • 1.3.6: List the needs of the priority population.
  • 4.3.5: Prepare data for analysis.
  • 4.3.6: Analyze data.
  • 4.5.1: Communicate findings by preparing reports, and presentations, and other means.
  • 6.4.3: Develop communication aids, materials, or tools using appropriate multimedia.
