I spent time today recording data and analyzing data from interviews with farmers throughout the state. The data was collected as part of a qualitative study that seeks to identify mental health and physical health challenges among farmers, barriers to care, and farm-related stressors. This is an important topic because, as previously mentioned, farming is one of the most dangerous occupations and presents many unique stressors that negatively impact the mental health of this population. Additionally, farming is a major industry within our state and represents 1 out of every 7 workers in Georgia, which makes this issue very relevant. For those in agriculture, farming is often a lifestyle and not just a career. Many farm owners live and work on their farm, so the stress of their job follows them constantly. That is why it is important to understand these issues within the context of farming culture because it heavily influences how they cope with their stress.
